Homeschooling – Begin From Home and Starts With Parents
Wishing you my Dear Friends a happy and prosperous New Year of 2017. May this New Year brings us closer together in our Mission of committed to develop the learning ability of our children through homeschooling in the areas of educations, knowledge and experiences enhancing their mental capabilities and skill abilities.
Bye bye 2016. Thank you for all the experiences, good and bad that enable us to learn from the past to endear the future. We must embrace Change.
The only thing that remained constant is CHANGE. If you don’t change, change will change you.
For the future, you must know where to go. If you don’t know where to go, anywhere does’nt really matter. But , you will get nowhere.
Simply said … the above MISSION statement provides a broad roadmap of my journey towards the destination of CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT of my beloved children. And I would like to share this Mission and brings you along on this exciting but important journey helping our children to become the successful responsible Leaders of tomorrow.
South African Golf Coach
I welcome the new year of 2017 pondering on the sanity of changing my childrens’ names. Or rather which names to use better. My elder of two children is Darwisya Adrianna. And her younger brother’s name is Darwish Adrian.
The thought of change was provoked by Rick – my childrens’ South African golf coach during the first lesson in early January 2017. (I enthused to enroll my children to take up golf as a new skill development ushering change welcoming 2017).
Rick jokingly said during the first day introduction, “ We prefer short names as in John, Jake and Rick. But, Malay likes long names, Siti Nurhaliza lah, Sharifah Mariam Syed Husin lah. And now in come two students with long names of Darwisya Adrianna and Darwish Adrian. Can I call them Adrianna and Adrian ?” (Rick married to Sharifah and have been staying in Bangsar for five years!)
Golf? My husband is a golfer. He tried to convince me many times that golf is a fitting game to develop our children. I disagreed. I later realized that I disagreed because I do not understand the game. However my curiosity gets the better of me when I stumbled upon articles on Tiger Woods. I read about his accomplishments and greatness ( … and of course his many affairs! ). What convinced me was that Tiger Woods started golfing at the age of three years old. How he went through college and later enrolled into Stanford University on golf scholarship. I changed my perception about golf in 2017.
What convinced me is that golf requires strict discipline. It is a precise game. One must be committed and focus to master it. You compete with your own self to constantly strive for betterment. I also am convinced that golf will help my childrens’ confidence through healthy social interaction and profitable networking in a friendly ‘gentlemen’ competitive environment.
Below is a video of Darwish in his Golf Class. You can see his seriousness. Actually he is quite emotional when it comes to golf especially each time he made the bad hit.
I enrolled my children into Cambridge English lesson in 2017. Oh my English. I can speak English and write English. Or rather its more closer to Manglish (Malay English lah). My children is better than me in speaking English. But, proper English? I need to outsource the teaching to professionals before its too late. (I can teach and coach them on Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics but not English).
Why Cambridge English? I am preparing my children to sit for the IGCSE. I want my children to get further educations from recognized elite English speaking university. Together with other relevant important subjects, passing IGCSE with good grades will ensure my children gained admission to prestigious elite University like Cambridge, Oxford, Monash, Stanford and Harvard. My husband always adviced … Aimed high. Shoot for the sky. Even if you missed, you will still play among the stars. But if you aimed low, if you missed , you will land on top of coconut tree).
I belief proficiency in languages especially English is compulsory for our children to succeed well in life. Competency and good command of English language in writing and speech are the bedrock for the acquisition of knowledge for their betterment in education and self development.
Darwish and Darwisya started the Cambridge English class with flying colors. They passed the Cambridge English Placement Test well and qualified straight to Level 4. This ‘Flyers’ level allowed them to skip three years of learning basic English and saved me good money from paying the said tuition fees.
Coincidentally, Miss Vera the Principal, called my children by their second name of Adrianna and Adrian just like Rick, the golf coach (The western minded people).
Of Arabic and Aussie Perceptions
Syukuralhamdulillah I am blessed with two beautiful children (all mothers think their baby is the most beautiful baby in the world .. he he). Darwisya Adrianna is a slim, pretty tall eleven years old girl. She is five foot five inches tall nearing my height. She loves riding horses. And Darwish Adrian is an adorable bespectacled nine years old boy. He loves golfing. But, they always do things together when come to homeschooling. Darwish Adrian have to run a little faster to catch up with his sister (being two years younger). And he is doing well.
Darwish and Darwisya are Arabic based names. Adrian and Adrianna are western sounding names. My husband suggested the western names and I bestowed them the Arabic names. We agreed that the names reflects both spiritual world of Islam and the physical world of today. Both are important and should compound each other for a healthy life that our children will live through and make alive.
We were fortunate to travel to Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt. Later we performed our Umrah in Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. The Arabs that we encountered in both countries easily took to address my children by their Arabic name of Darwish and Darwisya. No surprise.
Interestingly, when we visited Gold Coast in Australia, somehow our acquaintances in Aussie land automatically adopted the western sounding names of Adrian and Adrianna in addressing my children. Again, no surprise.
Anyhow (as my Aussie colleagues always expressed as we said lah in Malaysia), it is my Mission to ensure that my children gets the best of educations in their spiritual/religion development and physical worldly skill to succeed in life. I want them to lead a balanced life. The spiritual/religion foundation forms as the rail track guiding the physical worldly locomotives of life moving confidently in the right direction striving towards the destination of honest living and fulfilled LIFE. Insya’Allah. Aamiin.
Sharing Is Caring – Homeschooling Sharing
The New Year of 2017 will form the new beginning of my efforts to develop and enhance homeschooling technique. and application for my children. I want to better Plan, Strategize and Systemized IPN Homeschooling endeavor. I want to create and generate better networking among our group members. We strive to develop and effects better references, resources and interactions sharing with each other the best for our children. I want to apply modern day technology and utilize more visual aids especially videos in our methods and technique.
IPN (Islamic Parenting Network) was conceived on the platform of Islamic early childhood brain development. I developed the Kaedah DarwishDarwisya based on hafaz al-Quran (Quran memorization) at early childhood age as a method of brain development. The Kaedah DD is successful as can be testified by my childrens’ abilities and those children that adopt the technique.. The Programs still continues to this day.
As my children grows, I began to expand the scope and horizon of their learning and education venturing into new uncharted waters. I want to think outside-the-box. I don’t want them to be packed in the sardine can of our government education system. The system is for the masses and I believe it generally produces average educations for our children. I want them to be different. I want them to be better and faster in their learning and educations.
The foundation of reading, writing and memorizing that they managed to acquire and develop are now being applied to go beyond than just Quran and religious studies. I successfully introduced them to worldly skill and knowledge while advancing on their religious studies.
My children first and foremost think in English and speak in English. This allow me to search and acquire abundance of resources that are widely available in English. I managed to gather teaching materials on Physics, Chemistry and Biology. I exposed them to the world Financial Literacy and Money Management . They are good at abacus and mental arithmetics. They understand Leaderships through reading and watching videos of history of great Leaders and biography of excellent individuals of Islam and modern day inventors and world shakers.
I also emphasised on skill development. These are areas that I am not very competent. But it is important and critical on their confidence and competitive spirit building. I engaged professionals in swimming, karate, horse riding and golf to teach and coach them. They also tried archery and ice skating. Currently, they are learning Manga Cartoon/Animation drawings.
My husband exposed and taught them how to play chess, monopoly and attended to their other physical needs like running and bicycling. Yes of course they love playing video games which is allowed on limited time basis and based on reward system. You got the chance to play video games upon accomplishing a promised task successfully. No free lunch.
Most important of all is READING. I cultivated the love of reading among my two children since they were babies. Hafaz al-Quran is hearing, seeing, reading and memorizing. I taught them using flashcards when they were just six months old. They saw educational video both religious and non religous when they were one year old. I bought them books and they enjoyed shopping at Big Bad Wolf at three in the morning. They can sit for more than two hours at Popular Bookstore gouging their favorite books and they do that everyweek. Thanks Popular. They frequented PPAS Library once a week reading and borrowing books. Free reading.
Reading and watching relevant videos in English enhanced their command of English. (They speak English better than their father who holds an MBA from USA.. he he ). It is my commitment to ensure my children are excellent in Languages both spoken and in writing. It is my objectives that I want them to master English language and proficient in Malay and Arabics in that order.
JUST DO IT
Only Homeschooling can provide me the time and freedom to develop my children the way I see best and fit. But, I must know what is best and fit. What need to be done and done well. I must define the destination so that I can plan the long ardous and tricky journey. I must have the confidence, commitment and know how to maneuver the journeys. I must be able to undertake sacrifices in terms of my time, money and comfort zone to go the distance. I must be resilient , focused and determined. My husband must support me. I cannot do it alone.
IF you have the same passions like what I write above, I welcome you to join IPN Homeschooling Group.(click to join)
I am an avid follower of online educations. Most of them utilized video extensively in their teaching and education system. It is my intention to do the same. Technology and computerization is necessary as modern tools that enhanced home education and learning. I want to share with you and make these materials available among IPN Homeschooling Close Group members.
I understand many many more of you friends are tied to the current school system. You too can benefit by using IPN materials to augment your children current schooling system.
BUT, homeschooling must start with you parents. We as parents must shoulder the heavy responsibility undertaking the critical role in our children early childhood development. We must educate and expose ourselves to understand the education and learning needs of our children because …. Education Begin At Home Starts With The Parents.
NOTE: Homeschooling is best at pre-college level. Our children needs further education in their specialized field by attending studies at Universities.
On the other planet, billionaires like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckernberg are drop outs. So are our rich Politicians… he he.
